Biography of the Vice Chancellor
Dr. M A Mannan, Professor of Management at the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka joined as Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University on 24th March 2013. At Dhaka University, he was the Chairman and Director of MBA Program (Evening) of the Department of Management Studies, Director, Bureau of Business Research, Provost of Zahurul Haque Hall and Senate Member. Dr. Mannan received higher education in Management/Business administration at Dhaka University, Delhi University, Manchester University (UK) and Western Kentucky University (USA). He topped the list in both the SSC and HSC examinations, and obtained First Class in all higher-level public examinations. He received the most coveted Commonwealth Senior Staff Fellowship awarded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom, and the highly prestigious Fulbright Senior Academic Fellowship awarded by the United States International Agency for postdoctoral programs in Britain and USA respectively. During his 38 years of teaching career at the University level, for a few years, he worked as the Director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB), and as visiting Resource Person at the ILO international Training Centre, Turin, Italy and as guest lecturer in the MBA program of Delhi University. He also worked with East West University and North South University as adjunct faculty.
He is the founder president of National Management Association, Bangladesh and author of several degree-level popular textbooks including nationally reputed marketing book Biponon Jugey Jugey, Strategic Management and Essentials of Total Quality Management. Two of his books have been published from England/USA (Growth and Development of Small Enterprise), and New Delhi (Workers’ Participation in Management). One co-authored research-based book, Change Management, has been published from South Korea with the assistance of KOICA. He has to his credit over 70 research papers published in refereed journals at home and abroad. Dr. Mannan presented papers and participated in many international conferences/seminars organized by International Conference in Advances in Management (USA & Greece), University of Manchester (UK), IIEP-UNESCO (Paris, France), Association for Management Development Institutions in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka and Nepal), British Council (Srilanka,UAE), Commonweath of Learning (Nigeria), Qatar foundation (WISE Summit and Higher Education Leadership Program) etc. He has wide multicultural orientation resulted from his professional visits to USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Italy, France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Hungary, Nigeria, Qatar, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, , United Arab Emirates, Bhutan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, China and South Korea. Several award-winner for high-quality textbook writing and research paper, he was involved as management specialist/consultant, with different national and international organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNO (headquarters), UNICEF, ILO, UNDP, United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations, European Commission, Swedish SIDA, Canadian CIDA, Korian International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), World Vision, MSH (USA), Pathfinder International, Save the Children (USA), GoB’s Ministry of Education, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, BCS Administration Academy etc. He worked with the Ministry of Education of Sri Lanka and Korean International Cooperation Agency (South Korea) as international consultant. As management consultant & strategic planner, he worked with several business and not-for-profit organizations for developing their strategic plans, conducting job analysis, preparing job descriptions and undertaking performance/management audit.
His active interest and initiatives were instrumental in the introduction of the Strategic Management and TQM courses in the MBA programs at Dhaka University and several private universities. He taught these courses at Dhaka University and in some private Universities as adjunct faculty for quite a long time. He has widely lectured in-house and online including television channels and provided consulting services to different business organizations on the issues of TQM, human resource management and strategic management.

Professor Dr. Khondoker Mokaddem Hossain is currently the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University. He is the Founder Director, Institute of Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has conferred the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Development Studies from Massey University, New Zealand (1996). He has successfully completed Master in Demography (1982); Master in Sociology (1979) and Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours in Sociology (1978) from University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has joined as lecturer in the Department of Sociology in 1987.
Dr. Mokaddem is the a leading Sociologist, Disaster Management Expert, Demographer, Community Development Specialist and Social Impact Specialist of the country with extensive experience of conducting research on sociological, economical, social, anthropological, environmental, disaster, demographic, health, sexuality and AIDS related developmental issues. He has worked in many important and critical development projects and contributed as researcher, evaluator, consultant and team leader concerning social development issues like poverty, health, education, sexuality, ecology, environment, biodiversity, livelihood, gender, development, rural development, health and sanitation, disasters management, social forestry, children, slums and urban problems, industrial relations, labour force participation, demographic situation, education, course-curricula development, trafficking of women and children, migration, exploitation, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and sexuality, general, technical and vocational education, and many others. He possessed extensive methodological ability in analyzing all development issues by following the tools like social impact assessment, rapid rural appraisal, case studies, focus group discussion, sample survey, multi criteria analysis, participant observation, ethnography, kll, etc., to assess the existing problems of local people and also measure the likely impacts of development interventions on different socio-economic, indigenous and ethnic groups.
Professor Mokaddem has gathered wide professional skillness from his visit to USA, Canada, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Thailand, Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
Professor Mokaddem has published numerous peer reviewed research articles and research papers to his credit both at national and international journals. Moreover, he has written several books and published significant number of research reports in the areas of environment, disaster, education, sociology, demography and many interdisciplinary areas of knowledge including open and distance learning. He was also involved in developing courses, curriculum and syllabus in the area of education, social sciences, humanities, disaster, environment, gender, human security, conflict resolution etc. He was awarded New Zealand government’s MERT scholarship for pursuing his PhD dissertation. Professor Mokaddem was awarded UNDP, Ethiopian fellowship for developing online courses, curriculum and syllabus for Ethiopian Universities.
He has also supervised a number of Mphil and PhD dissertations in diversified areas of knowledge. He is involved in various Professional bodies as member of both in home and abroad.

Eminent Management and research scholar Professor Dr. Md. Abu Taher has joined as the Treasurer of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) on the 23rdDecember 2013. Professor Taher started his career with Government Service through Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) Examination in 1985. Subsequently, he joined to the Department of Management Studies, University of Chittagong (CU) as a Lecturer in 1988 and became a Professor of the same department in 2004. Before his joining in BOU as Treasurer Professor Taher was holding various important positions like Chairman, Department of Management Studies (2006-2009), University of Chittagong (CU); Chairman, Board of Governors Center for Business Studies, CU; Dean, Faculty of Business Administration, University of Chittagong (July 2012- Dec. 2013); Syndicate Member, USTC, Chittagong; Academic Advisor, Port City International University; Executive Editor, The CU Journal of Business Administration; Coordinator, Post-Graduate Diploma in Management, Chittagong Center, BOU, Member, Board of Governors, Institute of Education Research and Training, CU; Instructor, MBA and CEMBA Program, BOU and Coordinator, Faculty of Business Studies, Premier University, Chittagong.
Professor Taher has an excellent track of academic records. He obtained first class first in both Honors and Masters Examination in 1982 and 1983 respectively from University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. The title of his Ph.D. dissertation was “State and Industrial Relations: Bangladesh as a Case in Post colonial Third World Context” an important contribution in the field of state intervention in industrial relations. His special field of interest is HRM and conflict management. He received the highly prestigious Fulbright Senior Academic Fellowship awarded by the United States. He also attended post doctoral program in Inha University, South Korea and Texas A & M University, USA. Professor Taher visited USA, Canada, UK, Turkey, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, UAE and SAARC Countries in academic and research purpose. He also worked as a Visiting Professor in Texas A & M University, USA; Centre for Change and Conflict Resolution, Bryan, USA; Inha University, Incheon, South Korea; and Korean Academy of Business Ethics, Seoul, South Korea.
Professor Taher has published more than 52 research papers to his credit at national and international peer reviewed Journals. His recent research has appeared European Journal of Training and Development; Korean Journal of Business Ethics; Human Resource Development International (USA), Creativity and Innovation; South Asian Journal for Management; Journal of Business Administration and Indian Journal of Industrial Relations. By now he has authored several books like Management, Organizational Behavior, Business Communication, Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management, Business Mathematics, Conflict Management and Negotiation. He also presented 22 thought provoking research papers at international symposia and conference hosted by ILO, Fulbright Association of Philadelphia, USIS, AHRD, AMDISA, NIDA and so on. He has also completed some research projects funded by World Bank, ILO, COL, UGC etc.
